MAAAANNN, Ruby Sales is clearly SOOO quietly pissed off at police brutality.
(Oh wait, AND HAS BEEN for the last sixty years.)
(livestreaming a presentation/discussion)
NOTES: Looking at the world thru a black gaze; image of yourself
"Great control of your inner lives"
Song "I love everybody in my heart", inc. the verse "You can't make me hate you..."
tu autem dne miserere nobis
FUCKING Alabama
"Many of my colleagues, just like I, had come from very sheltered environments..."
naivete
continuity from the massacres of the 1868 to Jan. 6: vigilantism/paramilitary, and state forces esp. police complicit
Training: to be disciplined; to avoid having hatred; to avoid responding to hatred, b/c then they have taken control of who you were
...and the tools you used were: just songs, and prayers, and mass meetings
But if you were a black person, some of that was just...how you were already seasoned.
"Love was not complicity..."
Tom Coleman: 1st, he had already murdered him; 2nd, was pt of gp, so he was def. not alone ; 2b, so he was very much part of his culture
"He niggerized Jonathan" "felt like his future depended on murder"
Jan. 6: "comes from a long history of white vigilantism"
"Our desire for justice was redemptive. It was not punitive." did not want to destroy peoples' careers,
(Has some beef with MeToo)
coping with other people's imperfections; vs. not believing that they can be redeemed
Christianity's complicit connexion to Empire
"Jonathan tried to integrate the episcopal church in Selma. The parishioners wd not let him in."
Not there for other people, but for our own redemption
"It requires us to interrogate our assumptions about who we are..."
"The ch is becoming less and less relev b/c it is not developing a theology that is relev to the [postmodern world]"
How do you think about your worth as a person?
-> must be found in that we are all children of God
"...And where is the love that you have for the rest of the world?"
Betsy's comment: that we can have good community w. people who are different IF WE'RE ALL TRYING TO DO THE SAME THING
Ruby: ... relationship of othering to that
Trying to feel the humanity of people even when we have see "underneath that craziness"
