Things I am tempted to put as my out-of-office message:
The Office of Sponsored Programs* will be closed on Friday, July 15, in observance of National Research Administrators' Day.** So forget about getting anything done that day, 'cause we're all going to be at the beach.***
* WHY do we call ourselves that? Why is that, in fact, the semi-standard way to refer to departments of our type?!? Everybody knows that we're actually The Department Of Grants And Contracts Administration, not some sort of group responsible for, I don't know, sponsoring Little League teams or something.
** Having planned to write this, I looked up whether there actually IS a National Research Administrators' Day. And yup, there is, because at this point there's a National Bloody Everything† Day. But for some stupid reason, it's September 25, which for most organizations is the beginning, the end, or (frequently) "kinda both" of the fiscal year; which in turn means that most research administrators are working themselves to death while contemplating quitting the profession, starting a drug habit, or throwing themselves and/or their computers off a bridge.
† Well, everything that's printable, anyway. (And some things that aren't, in fact--e.g. October 15.)
*** LOL JK we're going to be trying to entertain our children.
(We're not ACTUALLY going to be closed, but at least half of us are going to be on vacation, so it's going to feel that way.)
