OK, everyone else is doing it:

1. Made biscuits from scratch?

Yes. (Don't know if I've ever made them from a mix, actually.) These days, I usually do Bettina's Emergency Biscuits (Thanks for that tip, rushthatspeaks or whoever it was!), which are not super-authentic, but ARE fast.

2. Fried fresh okra?

Nope. I'm not actively opposed to the idea, but I don't really feel the need to.

3. Made sourdough bread?

No, because I don't like sourdough.

4. Fried chicken?

Yes, frequently. Though I usually just do it for chicken nuggets, which is rather less authentic.

5. Made spaghetti sauce from scratch?

Yep, frequently. Sometimes via the (semi-)old family recipe that takes three hours and will keep you in spaghetti sauce for months; sometimes via the equally traditional "brown some meat and an onion, and then throw in whatever other ingredients you feel like" method.

6. Made any kind of yeast bread?

Yes, though less often in the last few years.

7. Baked a cake from scratch?

Yes.

8. Made icing from scratch?

Yep. I'm not actually good at making frosting LOOK good, but it still tastes good!

9. Cooked a pot roast with all the veg?

Yes.

10. Made chili from scratch?

Yes--at least the vegetarian kind. (I should propose adding it as an alternate to the winter dinner rotation...oh wait, I think I did propose that once, and [roommate] who grew up in Oklahoma and Colorado reacted with horror at this sacrilege.)

11. Made a meatloaf?

Yes. I didn't like it growing up, since I didn't like onions or worcestershire sauce. Then I discovered G's family recipe, which is actually a repurposed italian meatball recipe which I rather enjoy.

12. Made scalloped potatoes?

Yeah although they're a hell of a lot of work.
And now I have the "Scalloped potatoes" round stuck in my head

13. Made mac/cheese from scratch?

I don't think so. I didn't like macaronni and cheese even as a child--too bland for me.

14. Made a jello salad?

NO.

15. Made peanut brittle?

I don't like it much, so no.

16. Made fudge?

No, although I'd like to some day.

17. Made cookies from scratch?

Yes.

18. Cooked a pot of beans from dried beans?

Yes. See above under chili, and below under baked beans

19. Cooked a pot of greens?

Well, I've cooked greens in a pot. I think the kind they're really thinking of some more specific southern thing, probably involving salt pork?

20. Made cornbread from scratch?

Yes.

21. Made a pie dough from scratch?

Yes, though not much recently, 'cause roommate M. is WAAAAYYY better at it than I am.

22. Cooked a whole turkey?

I think so? I may have had help.

23. Snapped green beans and cooked them?

Yes.

24. Made mashed potatoes from scratch?

Yes.

25. What’s the most people you have (alone) prepared a whole meal for?

Four? I've been involved in cooking for many more, but always with at least one other person to help.

26. Poached an egg?

No, don't like eggs except as things like omelettes.

27. Made pancakes from scratch?

Yes.

28. Roasted vegetables in the oven instead of boiling them?

Yes.

29. Made fresh pasta?

Depends whether you count spaetzle.

30. Made croissants from scratch?

No, yikes. I mean, the recipe for puff pastry in The Supper of the Lamb sounds pretty straightforward but unbelievably intensive in terms of time and labor, and my impression is that croissants are similar.

31. Made tuna salad?

No, can't stand the stuff.

32. Fried fish?

Yes.

33. Made baked beans?

Yes, in a proper beanpot, even.

34. Made ice cream from scratch?

Yes, though not for years. Well, unless you count helping [personal profile] sovay's family.

35. Made jam or jelly?

Yeah, though not in ages: my rommates aren't keen.

36. Zested an orange or lemon?

Yes.

37. Made grits from scratch?

Nope. In part because I'm not from the South, they just aren't a thing I even think of.

38. Made an omelette?

Yes, although I'm not great at it.

39. Lived in a house without a dishwasher?

Several times. We have one at the moment, though.

40. Eaten a bowl of cereal for supper?

No, ugh. I like breakfast cereal fine, but only for breakfast; for dinner, it just wouldn't be satidaying.
...okay, I *have* eaten cereal as a before-bed snack, so maybe that counts.

I've been involved in cooking for many more, but always with at least one other person to help.

This meme made me realize that I tend to think of cooking as a communal activity rather than a solo one, unless the eating is also solo.

Well, unless you count helping sovay's family.

Totally counts!

Yes, me too! I struggled to answer the "what's the most people you've cooked for by yourself", because if I'm cooking for a party, there's pretty much always someone cooking with me.

Right! I am confident that I cooked meals for friends or family by myself just to see if I could, but that's . . . not the point of cooking?

Croissants are definitely worse than puff pastry. There's a reason everyone in France buys them from the baker.
