Realm: Various - Subrealm: Things that are annoying

(Wednesday, 12 April)

* Forgetting that it's April, and therefore bringing the wrong (out of date) Studi-ticket up to the Uni, so that when I get kontrolliert, I get fined. (Fortunately, they have a policy that if you show up at the office with a valid one, it's only 5E, instead of 40, but still. dumb.)

* The fact that the bus customer service office is closed on Wednesday afternoons.

* Having your webbrowser spaz when you try to open a composition window in webmail, so that it opens 40 composition windows.

* The fact that completely random people, whom I don't (believe I) know, have me listed as a friend on their LJ's. Possibly the LJ servers hiccuped, but...

* Having the Cisalpina be delayed for an hour, causing Grace to panic that we're going to miss our flight out of Frankfurt to Istanbul. Bloody Italian trains.

* Taking flights that are scheduled to arrive at 2 AM...and then get delayed!

Perhaps they are FOAFs? You shouldn't be irked at random people reading your journal, because journals are posted for the public to see. If you want only your friends to read something, you can always friendlock it.

Delayed transportation sucks, though.

That was lucky about the fine. I was caught on the train to London without my Young Person's railcard a while back (I have two holders, and accidentally brought the empty one) - after paying L14 for the ticket, I was fined L35. The man who fined me told me that if I really did have a valid YP card at home, I could write and petition the penalty. So, to show how honest I was, I bought a full price adult ticket for the way home (L17), even though they rarely check on late trains.

Of course, one polite letter explaining how very sorry I was, how I really did think I have my card with me, photocopies of the valid card, of the two photocards in their holders (cause of my confusion), and profuse apologies and promises never to do it again, what do I get? A form letter from the "independent" review saying "You didn't have your card, too bad."

So, if I had been a truly dishonest person just looking to scam the system, I would have paid 35L that day (having not bought a ticket either way). Instead I paid about 60L. I hate British rail these days. Especially WAGN.

Sorry - I shouldn't gripe all over your blog. But I'm glad for you that they reduced the fine.

It is weird about people putting people they don't know as friends. I actually have little interest in reading anyone's journal whom I don't know. On flickr, someone has listed me as a contact whom I don't know at all, and I only have 6 pictures there (two of my roommate's cat). Though with people's strange online names, it's hard to tell. I have trouble recognising mutual friends on other people's journals because I know their real names, but not their lj-name. It's one of the reasons I've gone to going by my initials. Also, because it's easier to type :).

2am? I'm sorry. I thought getting to London by 9:30 was bad. But was it worth it in the end?

Yeah, though Istanbul wasn't QUITE as exciting as I'd expected. ah well.
Sorry to hear about getting caught with the wrong railcard; and you're always welcome to rant about things (esp. cases where privatization makes something work LESS well)
S, what ARE FOAFs? Oh, friends of another friend?

Privatisation just about ALWAYS makes things work less well.
