Saturday: We were all going to brew beer with Stephen, but his yeast failed to activate. So instead, the two of us invited him and Miti over for sweet and sour pork and yummy bars, to which they contributed large numbers of asian appetizers. Tasty. And we cooked a lot, and talked about moose hunting and other odd topics.
When I visited him earlier in the day, Stephen was working on the magnetic yeast-stirrer that he's been planning. Hence I was greeted at the door with, "Hi. Do you have a soldering iron?"
Yep, I'm living down the street from a mad scientist.
Sunday: We both drove up to Simsbury at an ungodly hour of the morning. I sat around the office during the 8:00 service--and finally finished this chunk o' dissertation I've been working on. Yay! Only three weeks later than planned! Then actually got to attend church with Grace for a change.
After church at coffee hour, witnessed a strange and unusual sight: people actually campaigning for appointment to a committee (in this case, the search committee for a new rector), rather than having to do it on the principal of Rule By The Willing.
The real reason for my trip, though, was to see Darik and
mhorai--old friends from college, for any of you who haven't met them. I spent several qulity hours getting Darik about applying to teach at schools. He, meantime, waxed nostalgic about his time at the Children's Museum in Hartford, where his work apparently featured being bitten by various species--including a hedgehog that thought his finger might be edible. Grace showed up for dinner (thai chicken, followed by lots and lots of cookies), after which we played the board game History of the World. Now we really really want t play it again, and not just to get revenge on Darik for kicking all our butts when he drew the Romans.
Monday: Handed in dissertation chunk, tried to figure out what to do next.
Also had coffee with a reference librarian and attended a lecture on the nuclear origins of environmentalism by William Cronon, who's an absolutely brilliant environmental historian.
While biking quietly home, somebody opened their car door onto the bike lane without due care and attention. I was fine; the bike ultimately needed its front wheel beaten straight. I'm spending way too much time at the bike shop. I think the car door may actually have received the worst damage... The idiot and I exchanged phone numbers and all that responsible stuff, before anyone asks.
Wednesday: It actually snowed! Well, sort of. We had a low-grade blizzard of sleet. (Ah, that New Haven "Wintry Mix"!) This made getting to the restaurant where we ate a ridiculously good valentine's dinner a little more complicated.
Nini's is, oddly to me, byob. They're also right down the street from the new Wine Thief. Synergy, anyone?
"Yeah," said the waitress, "we're actually thinking of getting a bike for people to go get wine."
That would be cool.
After walking a mile home in the snow and wind, Grace was pooped, so I went sledding on Divinity Hill alone. It was really too slick to be really fun: even on a longish sled like ours, you ended up going down sideways unless you went head first (nerve-racking). I actually tried sleeding along the incredibly gentle bt above the main slope, which worked fine even when you were going diagonally across it, but couldn't convince anyone else to try it. Silly people, wanting to be video'd as they risk life and limb instead...!
Hookay. Check email, then jog over to the Devil's Gear and finally retrieve my bike. And fervantly hope that I manage not to so anything else to it on my way home through the wind and the road slush.
