K to me:
The verdict is the following: We discussed the options on the Germany issue and, for reasons I don't have time to get into because |I am still in the middle of the meetings, we decided to pursue your offer. Your inexperience is obvisouly something that is of concern but you are coming from a top department, you seem eager (which is important) and the physical proximity between us is also something that counted positively because it would be easy to meet in the event you want to discuss things face to face.

We are going to treat you like everyone else and expect the same quality as with the rest of the participants. But at the same time I personally intend to be very supportive in terms of whatever you may need in order to give us the best possible paper...

Me to K:
Thank you very much for your confidence in me, and for your offers of support! Yes, I think that I should be able to get you a draft by the end of the summer with no problems. While (as you noted) I can scarcely claim to be the world expert in German economic history, I think that I have a good enough grasp of the secondary literature (as well as people to whom to turn for advice) to produce a good contribution.
...

PS A curiosity question, which I hope will not sound impertinent: have you read Dahlman's /The open field system and beyond /? And what did you think of it?

(Not sure if throwing this in was a good idea. But I really do want to know what he thought of it!)

So yeah. I'll be spending lots o' time over the next few months writing this thing! and reading every single thing written on the subject... It'll be just like orals again!

wish me luck...
