Sep. 13th, 2014 09:36 pmJust a quick note to say: I made it up Mt. Tom and back, without spraining anything, getting in trouble for finding 9-11 remembrances OTT when they mix mountains into'em,* or (actually more of a concern) getting hypothermia, exacerbated by alcohol consumption, at the top. It was unexpectedly cold.
Having my Aunt&partner join us at the last minute, AND do so bearing beer, was in a lot of ways the highlight of the day.**
* So apparently there's this thing where people put flags up on the tops of all the New Hampshire 48 the Saturday after Sept. 11.
Well.
I am fine with 9-11 remembrances generally, although I feel strongly that it would be done best as the British do Armistice Day: a pause to remember, made more striking in some ways by the fact that it's in the middle of what is otherwise an ordinary day. I do NOT care for my country's tendency toward flag-worship; and I guess I feel about 9-11 stuff as I do about mining: I'm generally in favor, but it'd better not corrupt what's around it; and if you mix it up with mountaintops, I'm gonna get annoyed.
** I mean, I'd brought a can of hard cider - "the poor westerner's champagne" - to be able to toast the occasion; but hey, free beer = good.
(I don't much like actual champagne. And champagne bottles are a LOT heavier, so getting a bottle of it up Wildcat or whatever for Dan's last mountain next summer...
