Someone writing an editorial in praise of the Queen for her recent birthday noted that the most awe-inspiring thing about her is her willingness and ability to fulfill the part of her job that requires her to work the press -- to, at the age of eighty, spend hours on end on her feet making genial, personally-tailored, assiduously politically neutral, and unboring small talk with an endless group of people who devote their lives and professions to saying nasty things about her family. Most people just plain couldn't do that, even if they believed that it was for the good of their country and it meant they got to live in a palace.
