Before Grace left, I drew up an elaborate schedule of things to get done while she was gone. Not all of this has happened.
There are a number of reasons for this, including applying for jobs (of which more in a moment), stress, and general slack-ass. But the main reason has been that far more of my evenings than expected have been taken up with partying.
On Tuesday, friends and colleagues Elizabeth and Jim invited everyone over to a massive backyard barbecue, where we were mauled by their job, discussed the academic job market and the peculiarities of Yale cataloging, and ate many burgers. Then on Wednesday, I had a parish picnic by the sea. This one was expected. As usual, this was way cool and I wished I'd arrived early and gotten to go swimming or something...
So now I had masses of leftover potato salad, but it was destined to stay uneaten for a while longer. Because Stephen (mad scientist) and Miti (medievalist) suggested that we go out for Vietnamese food, to celebrate before Miti went off to Middlebury, and before Stephen and I bottled the latest batch of beer. (Which is quite tasty, actually). (So were the soft-shelled crabs in scallion sauce and lemongrass chicken, and the tea, although drinking tapioca balls through a straw is decidedly weird.
Now, I have no more parties. It's kind of nice, actually.
Subrealm: Indy
Adding to the chaos, New Haven has just been transformed into the non-existent city of Richmond. That's right, they're shooting the fourth Indiana Jones Movie. Which apparently involves people climbing off motorcycles into the windows of cars, while all involved are moving at high speed in heavy traffic. The practical upshot was that the front entrance of Sterling is closed off, people in 1950's outfits are found lounging, schmoozing and munching around Cross Campus, and one block of Prospect street is blocked with Studio trucks, classic cars and a vintage bus, while mechanics repair early Harley's on Wall Street. Meanwhile much of Chapel Street has apparently gotten yet another facelift, to prevent (for exampel) there being a Starbuck's in the 50's. I should really go look at this. It must be making the Arts and Ideas Festival even more interesting than usual...
Subrealm: The weekend
The weekend is going to be even more interesting. Things I'm doing tomorrow:
* Going to Food Closet to see if they need help.
* If not (or if I get out early enough), going to the consecration of our new Suffragan Bishop. In Woolsey Hall. In the middle of all the filming chaos. yeah.
* Picking up the key to the new apartment.
* Moving everything portable into it.
* Things that may not get done: go to farmers' market, go jogging.
* Things I just cannot do: babysit in-laws' dog, Ultimate Frisbee.
Oh yeah. Than on Sunday I pick Grace up at the airport! Yay!
Subrealm: Oh, and...
I got a job! Sort of. The pay's not great, and I need to renegotiate in September. But starting Monday, I'll be working at the Yale Development Office!
