(Thursday)
* The ice cream truck in this neighborhood plays “Für Elise,” a tune that accords ill with the general jauntiness of ice-cream-truck-generated music. It makes me wonder what kinds of treats they offer. Black coffee ice cream, coated with bittersweet chocolate? Artificially flavored AbsinthePops?
* The new place is currently in a state of complete chaos, despite the fact that we moved a week ago. This is the downside of having no set date to vacate the apartment: you have lots of time to move, but it drags on and on. Anyway, we’re at the “gets worse before it gets better” point where most things are out of boxes, but not all of them have found their proper homes yet, due to the need to acquire some additional furniture, put up picture hooks & things, and sort all our random crap first. So it’s in a state that the disorder makes even me antsy.
* Our old apartment was too small, but very efficiently organized. This one is large and badly organized. This is reflected especially in the time it takes to get dressed in the morning—a complicated problem, given the need to balance the office dress code with the temperature; and since despite the fact that we moved because we didn’t have enough closet space, it turns out (ironically) that the new place ALSO doesn’t have enough, since two of the closets (including the one in our bedroom) are extremely shallow.
(We could, I suppose, have plopped for the bedroom with two closets, one of them the enormous one under the stairs, but that would have meant that going to the bathroom in the middle of the night would have involved a long detour through the inconveniently-placed doorway between dining room and kitchen. As I say, this place was not well laid out.)
* We’re going to have various cool people move into apartments near us at the end of the month. This will rock.
* Yes, there will be a house-warming party at some point. Perhaps more than one.
* Theoretically, we have free dsl. In practice, the landlady has not yet gotten the router to work. So heaven only knows when this will actually get posted…
Update: (Sunday)
* The apartment is now in considerably less chaos. There is still a lot of stuff sitting around this study waiting to be sorted, but at least you can see the floor.
* Still no internet access. Well, actually it’s weirder than that: GRACE can get online, but I can’t. Maybe something about Macs?
* The ice cream truck is now playing the Tetris theme music.
