Grace's comment, on getting up this morning, was "I'm not sure whether I'm getting morning sickness again, or whether I'm just queasy as a result of two unusually large and rich dinners on successive days." It may be wishful thinking, but I'm inclined toward the latter view--I certainly feel a bit green this morning. Hence why I'm posting, instead of doing actual work...
Let's back up a few weeks. Our story begins with an email from
straussmonster, back before Thanksgiving.
So I am currently engaged in the worst shitwork that leads to the best result--shelling pecans. Are any of you interested in the tasty results and doing something specific with them? This will determine how much I rip up the skin on my fingers shelling these things. 100% fresh backyard grown Texas pecans. Mmmmm. I have The Classic recipe for the pie...
SG and I consulted on this, and thus was born the concept of Pie Evening III: Attack of the Pecans. "But maybe we should wait a couple of weeks," he suggested when I bumped into him that Friday. "I'm still recovering from eating three kinds of pie yesterday."
In the interim,
straussmonster returned with vast quantities of tasty nuts, the three of us climbed a mountain and plotted further, and Grace and I went into pre-concert panic mode. She had her concert yesterday; my group was a sideshow for another on Thursday. Thus I surfaced a little earlier, to the realization that doing Pie day on Sunday was Not Going to Work. So I got off my butt, and asked people if they would like to come around on Saturday. They concurred; I emailed some more people, and forgot to tell them I meant Saturday. But things more or less worked out. We had a combined Pie and Birthday party for Grace. Eight people showed up, and devoured no less than four pies: a quiche by SG (very vegetable-free, but with lots of bacon, in his best tradition), an apple-cranberry pie brought by some kind friends, a meat pie. And of course, the pecan pie. Divine...
This would have been enough over-eating for one weekend; but last night the New haven Chorale gave its holiday concert. Lots of lovely Bach... And then they all went out to Adriana's, bringing this dedicated usher along. And consumed a...let me count...seven course banquet, with multiple offerings served on enormous platters at every course but one. It was wonderful; the only problem was that after the bruschetta and the eggplant and the calamari (mmmm....) and the...I just didn't have ROOM to appreciate the veal marsala. (Yes I know: tiny little first world problems.) And I don't think anyone else did either.
Anyway, that's why I STILL have a headache.
So happy birthday to Grace, and mad props to
straussmonster, who will be getting Christmas cookies.
