Squigamunk came over this morning, and we packed all the things.
Well, not ALL the things. She came over to help with the books, and we ended up getting most of my library, excl. cookbooks, children's books, and stuff I'm trying to read. In about an hour. So then things kinda spiraled from there, and so now the space formerly occupied by my bookshelf in here is now boxes stacked waist high, there's a box marked "Fragile--Paintings!" on the bottom shelf of the OTHER bookcase, and the trunk of my car has most of my personal china and cooking equipment. (We moved it down because there's no safe way for one person to carry the damn' thing, 'cause we packed it in one of the mid-to-large-sized LL Bean boxes that she'd brought along. And we packed it because I figure I can just use Mitbewohner's stuff for the next couple of weeks.*
Squigamunk rocks. Especially since she was running on less than an hour of sleep.
(I *will* still need help boxing up the last things and hauling everything down the stairs to whatever vehicle I'm using, though.)
Meantime, job applications. Tomorrow: the Gardner; tonight I finished up an application to paralegal for an environmental lawyer, which would ALSO be pretty cool.
Umm, anybody want to proofread it?
Or just provide general feedback. Especially since I've just sort of dashed this off since I hate the business so much, and so I probably repeat myself, or need to alter phrasing.
Dear Ms. X,
I’m interested in working as a paralegal for your firm. My background is in academia, but having worked as a college professor for several years I’ve realized that I want to take my career in a new direction. I have thus for some been considering a move into the legal profession (but dreading the thought of law school), and working as a paralegal might give me a back door into the field. That being said, I also feel that I bring with me a wealth of experience that would make me an asset to your office.
My background as an educator have excellent communication skills. I’m experienced in writing a wide variety of materials, creating (and giving) presentations, and dealing with a wide variety of audiences. I also have excellent research skills, and would welcome the opportunity to put them to good use, particularly for environmental causes.
I currently work as a freelance translator and editor, which has not only polished my writing skills but also given me practice in maintaining clients’ confidentiality picking up an adequate knowledge of new fields quickly. (My PhD is in history, but most of the papers I’ve proofread in the last few years have been on literature, intellectual property issues, or marketing.) I have a considerable background in working with environmental nonprofits, both as a volunteer (with Concerned Citizens of South Portland and the Sierra Club) and in paid political campaigns. I also have experience with databases, including both inputting information into the Sierra Club’s HELEN database and creating my own Excel databases to tabulate student grades and to keep track of data during my dissertation research. Finally, I think that all of my past employers will testify to my high degree of professionalism, my dedication to the job at hand, and my excellent writing skills. I thus feel that I would be an asset to your office, and I look forward to hearing more about your work.
* Eep! Only like fifteen days! And I still need to do my taxes and rent a truck!</small
