I really do not understand people (and to an extent, institutions) who plant ornamental fruit-bearing plants and don't harvest the resultant deliciousness.

Planting trees and not collecting the fruit. That's Old Testament curse material, right there.

(I'm specifically thinking of that shrub that bears berries similar to blueberries, only maroon when ripe, which everybody around Somerville seems to have;* but it applies to other things as well, and I think I had a similar rant about apples at one point, too.)

* Thoreau (Wild Fruits) informs me that I am thinking of the Serviceberry, or, as he called it, the shad bush. Apparently no one in 1860 knew they were edible, either.
I probably *should* worry about whether they've been sprayed with pesticide, tho.
