Who and what precisely is it?

Welp, it's Beilby Porteus (who turns out to have been a notable abolitionist, as well as all the stuff you might expect, and thus is a bit LESS obscure than I'd thought--I'd heard of him only because he consecrated one of the first bishops in the Episcopal Church). This is the first American edition of his Sermons on Several Subjects (Hartford, 1806).

I have never encountered that first name before. It looks like either a surname or a place. Or possibly slightly misspelled.

I hope you enjoy owning a 210-year-old book of his sermons!

Do you suppose Porteus is a famous Anglican name? There was a longtime parishioner at Old North named Richard Porteus (died in 2011) who from his obituary (which I looked up online to find the year) seems to have had a number of clergy relatives.
