In answer to both of you: I am keeping a bandaid on it most of the time: not because it's in danger of bleeding, or even that it's particularly tender, but because it is so freaky-looking that it kinda makes me want to vomit.

Sympathies. I had a similar thing happen with the smallest toenail on my left foot recently and while it did not make me want to throw up, it looked very weird until it started to grow back in.
