Why the FUCK do we still fund public education with local property taxes? It's not just that it perpetuates numerous kinds of injustice and systemic racism and and and; we could cut SOOOOO many Gordian knots if we did this sjit on a state level.
(Including a whole pile of Gordian knots connected to Programs That Annoy White People.)

The cynical (?) answer is that all aspects of the American Experiment are based on the idea that poor people don't deserve nice things.
There was an trial years back in Vermont, IIRC, in which all school funds for the state were lumped together and supposed to be divvied up to each local school system. Except that a bunch of the municipalities took the money and still didn't give it to the schools.
I live in one of the extreme examples of the current system - our housing prices are high because our schools are perceived to be worth the taxes on the high priced houses, so helicopter parents with means move here. The town participates in METCO and the regional vocational school, but that doesn't make us egalitarian.
