Well, this isn´t going to be as cool as Sovay´s poem, but I thought I´d say something about the turning of the year. I came back from Vienna and suddenly it was autumn: the leaves on the chestnut trees had begun to turn color, it was actually chilly that evening as I walked out to a bizarre dinner from my roommate´s even more bizarre Romanian friend, and the air had that wonderful clean, clear...vibrant feeling to it, like a steam in the mountains. (Yes, that sounds horribly clichéd). As I hauled my two enormous suitcases to Konstance at the end of the next week--after a final potluck with marvellous food which was nonetheless far more staid than I´d expected--it was hazy again, but you could still see those two crags by Immenstaad from a long way off: the mountains that meant that this train journey was nearly at an end, and that I would soon (well, ok, after taking a train, a bus, and a ferry, and hauling my suitcases, which have only half a set of wheels between them, between all of these modes of transport, hoping to find baggage carts and gaining a new appreciation for M and C´s troubles at the beginning of the year) see Grace again, and be able to put my stuff DOWN and not move anywhere for the next nine months or so.

Subrealm: The Bodensee
Yesterday we went to the beach, because it was a nice day, and I went swimming and dam´near got hypothermia. I suppose that I shouldn´t be surprised that the lake is...not very warm, given that it´s composed in large part of glacial meltwater. But it was still a shock.
It also seems to be very clean (possiböy the result of Stuttgart´s concern for its water supply, as much as environmentalism). In any case, some combination of these factors means that it´s incredibly clear--as I was taking the ferry from Meersburg to Konstanz, I watched ducks diving after tasty things, and you could watch them all the way to the bottom, two or three meters below the surface. And I´ve forgotten most of what I know about the subject, but I think that fog is caused by warm air moving over cold water...no, I think I´ve got that backwards. If it were TRUE, it would account for why it seems to be usually misty here: like the Lake of Dreams in The Hero and the Crown, you can never see the other side, even if you´ve been all around it...

I am very glad you liked the poem! And if you meet Luthe in Stuttgart, I want to hear about it.
